Symbolic and 'mathematical projections'* such as world maps, drawings, and symbols play a huge role in how we navigate the world every day. We use them to understand our place within larger contexts, and to communicate large amounts of information. This is why projections are used to study a lot of the most fundamental concepts/objects in the universe such as infinities, tensors, and higher dimensional objects.

About the piece:

I find emotions and mappings to be, themselves, projections of all our sensorial inputs (information) into a general subjective experience we call ‘feelings’ and ‘emotions.’ If so, perhaps some of the most fundamental aspects of our experience and our interface with reality can only be explored through our biological projections, that is through our emotions. The collection of pieces Projections & Time Sculptures invites us to investigate the topology of emotion.

Projection I: 1D / 2D / 3D  (video above) is the first piece in the collection. Specifically, Projection I  investigates the topology of emotion as represented by 'the line'—a single emotional thought embodied in a single melody, by a single player.

Unlike Colore artists, Disegno artists such as Vasari and Botticelli argued objects are represented by their edges, embodied by the ‘line.’ Similarly, Projections I  works with the ‘line’ (melody) as the basic unit of representation and the manifestation of the first dimension (1D). Throughout the piece 'the line' is investigated contrapuntally through canons, developed, and harmonized culminating in a 3 voice cannon that crystalizes the essence of the work, 'the experience': a three dimensional reconstruction of the initial line/emotional though.

* 'Mathematical projections' are defined in topology as the representation of a higher dimensional object in a lower dimensional space. A common example are world maps which take the three dimensional globe and represent it in two dimensions as a map.
